ANTIGONE: An audio drama

ABOUT “Antigone”
Written by Sophocles in 442-440 BC, the story follows the relatives of Oedipus as they battle for influence over the kingdom of Thebes. After his two sons are slain by each other, Creon ascends to the throne and decrees one son will be honored and one will be desecrated. Antigone, daughter of Oedipus, rebels against this order to give her brother a proper burial and is faced with certain death for doing so. The play is a timeless tale of power, resistance, and standing up to oppressive forces in ways that will force them to listen.
We are currently accepting submissions for the following roles:
ISMENE* – Daughter of Oedipus, sister to Antigone. She is caught between honoring her sister’s wishes and saving her from persecution.
CHORUS LEADER – Creon’s right-hand man. A rugged warrior who is pious to the gods.
HAEMON* – Son of Creon, in love with Antigone.
TEIREISIAS* – An old prophet who warns Creon of his demise. Speaks gently but holds a razor-sharp tongue.
GUARD* – A soldier serving on palace grounds. Rather helpless in the face of danger.
*doubles as CHORUS
These roles are open to actors of any gender, race, identity, or ability. This is a non-union, unpaid opportunity.
REHEARSALS & RECORDING
Rehearsals and recording sessions will be held on Wednesday and Friday evenings, 6-9pm, at Whitman-Hanson Community Access (115 South Ave, Whitman MA) in September through November. Due to the timeline of this project, there will be minimal rehearsals for each scene. Rehearsals will be based on actor availability.
HOW TO AUDITION
Please record a 1-minute monologue of your choice that best showcases your vocal acting. Any monologue is acceptable, but classic theatre monologue are preferred (Greek, Shakespeare, etc.). Email your recording and any conflicts from September through November to maenadtheatretroupe@gmail.com. Resumes and headshots are not required, but welcomed. Self-tapes will be accepted on a rolling basis through mid-August.
